Goble, Ronald Preston

Ronald Preston Goble, age 85, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away at home on Thursday, August 29, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Ron was born in Van Lear, Kentucky. His family relocated to Wilmington, Delaware when Ron was very young. Ron graduated from H. Fletcher Brown Vocational High School in 1957. Ron met his wife, Carol, on August 25, 1957; they married on October 1, 1960. Ron worked as a Chemist at Atlas Point, Wilmington, Delaware. After 35 years, Ron retired from ICI (formerly Atlas Point) on January 1, 1991.

While employed for Atlas, Ron enjoyed playing basketball and softball. Ron was a pitcher and a coach for the ICI (formerly Atlas) men’s slow pitch softball team. With Ron’s coaching skills, the team won several tournaments (1973 and 1977). In 1981, the team became the Class A Slow-Pitch Champs. Ron coached his daughters teams for Talleyville Softball and the Women’s ICI Slow-Pitch softball team. He took pride in the opportunities he had to coach. If he was not his daughter’s coach, he was an honorary coach on the sideline.

Ron loved to go fishing in Princeton, Maine. He traveled to his parent’s cabin with either his family, his Kentucky family, or his fishing buddies. Along with fishing in Maine, Ron tried to find time to throw a line in on family vacations.

Ron was an avid Phillies fan. For many years, he and his brother Farrell held season tickets. Ron attended the 1980 World Series Game 6, when the Phillies defeated the Kansas City Royals at Veterans Stadium. If he couldn’t make a game in person, the games were always playing on the TV.

Ron and Carol loved to travel with their closest friends. Their favorite vacation was taking cruise ships all over the world; Europe, South America, Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean. During the winter, if they were not on a cruise, Ron and Carol spent their time living in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Ron is predeceased by his wife, Carol Walls Goble. He will be dearly missed by daughters, Diana North (Mark), Robin Hamilton (Jacob), and Melinda FitzGerald; sister Carol Loupe; and brother Farrell Goble (Pat). In addition, Ron is blessed by three grandchildren; Jessica Clough, John (Jack) North and Megan North, along with many other loving family members and friends. Ron is the son of the late Edith and Russell Goble of Wilmington, Delaware.

The family will hold a private memorial service to celebrate Ron’s life. In lieu of flowers, please take your family or someone you love to dinner. Ron always enjoyed a good meal with family and friends.
