Elizabeth Kalert Hummel February 3, 1929- August 24, 2024
Loving wife and mother of six, Elizabeth (Betty) Hummel (95) passed away peacefully in her home on August 24th.
Born in Breese IL of William and Ruth Kalert, she lived in St. Louis, and graduated from Hickey College, before marrying the love of her life, Donald Hummel, in 1950.They moved their family of five to Wilmington in 1958, where their family grew to include three more children.
Betty (Nana) was an amazing cook and hostess who loved her family deeply. We fondly remember the many beautiful holiday celebrations she created for all of us….always including her fabulous baked goodies! She was a member of the Questers, and enjoyed collecting and restoring antiques, often giving them to family members as gifts. Other interests included travel, bridge, decorating and oil painting. Her home was filled with her beautiful artwork. She also enjoyed volunteering at St. Francis Hospital (for almost 40, years), Mary Magdalen Church, Meals on Wheels, and St Patrick’s outreach program.
She is survived by her children: Mary (John) Gandolfo, Dan (Lairsey) Hummel, Lisa Hidy, Jayne Hennessy, Sallie (Tim) Weiler, and Chris (Elsie) Hummel, as well as 16 grand-children: Katie Ciecko, Julie Brazill, Jonathan Gandolfo, Megan Stevenson, Andy Gandolfo, Alex Weiler, George Weiler, Molly Winkler, Gabriella Hummel, Ruth Taylor, Jeff Hennessy, Grant Hummel, Naomi Weiler, Abigail Hummel, Nathan Hummel and Topher Hummel, as well as 17 great grandchildren, sister MaryAnn (Frank) Kilcullen and nieces and nephews She is predeceased by her husband Donald, brother William, and sons in law Buzz Hennessy and Jim Hidy.
Betty was a devoted wife of 73 years, a wonderful mom, grandmother and great- grandmother. She inspired all of us with her kind and gentle spirit, and the life of faith she lived so well, even in her challenging days. As her husband Don said so well in a note he wrote to her “Thank you for becoming the most wonderful mother you are, for our great family. Your beauty has grown brighter with each passing year”.
Mom we love you, and will hold you in our hearts forever.
