Carol Anne Mateja (Lalli), affectionately known as Mimi, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on September 5, 2024, at the age of 82 in Wilmington, Delaware. Born on May 4, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Mimi dedicated much of her life to the caring profession as a nurse. She graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and went on to serve her community for 55 years. Her career included 23 years with St. Francis Hospital, as well as many years at GI Associates and Silverside Medical Aid Unit. Her devotion to nursing was paralleled by her generosity and commitment to her family and friends.
She was a member of the Church of the Holy Child Roman Catholic Church where she had been a member since the church was built.
Carol is preceded in death by mother Leona Lalli, father Victor Lalli, sister Loretta Tronzo (Lalli), husband Walt Mateja.
Carol is survived by her children, Michael Kananen, Brian (Melissa) Kananen, and Laura Kananen. Grandchildren: Taylor, Thomas, Michael, Jeremy, Nicole, their spouses and significant others; and great-granddaughter, Kalliope. Bonus daughter Lisa (Mateja) Moser as well as extended family friends who looked to her as a mother. Mimi also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Louis Tronzo, nieces, Lisa Georgetti (Nello) and Elaine (Mark) Commendatore) and their families. Mimi had a large and growing extended family who have all touched her heart. Mimi was also grandmother to generations of dogs.
The viewing will be Friday September 13 from 6-8 pm at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 14 at 12:00 pm at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Rd Wilmington, DE. Interment will be held privately at a later time.
Her life was a testament to her roles as a devoted daughter, mother, spouse, nurse, friend, grandparent, and great-grandparent. Mimi’s life and legacy will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
