George Andrew Craig, Jr., age 63, a lifelong resident of the Wilmington area, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, after a short illness. George’s wife, Julia Whann Craig was by his side. George was predeceased by his father, George A. Craig, Sr.; his brother Richard Lemon; his step-father and fellow Marine, Richard Lemon and his wife, Christine Lemon. In addition to Julia, he is survived by his two sons, George III, and Joshua Porter (Danyelle), their mother Deborah Craig; his granddaughter Mia Porter; his mother, Mary Ann Pack (Jim); his step-mother, Judy; his brothers, Martin Lemon (Holly), Christopher Craig, Joseph Lemon (Shavonne); and his sister, Jennifer Webber (Joe). In addition, George will be greatly missed by his nieces, Brynee (Kyle), Autumn, Meadow, and Elizabeth; and his nephews, Michael Haines (Kelly), Kyle, Matthew (Caitlyn), Justin, Tyler, Raymond (Morgan), and Nathan. George has many aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him, especially Aunt Kate and Uncle Charlie Mardecz. His good friends Francis DiPersio and Bob Hoover and their families have been by his side through this very difficult time.
When George came around, he was always “family”. He loved family, holidays, especially Christmas, and decorating with lights and always said , “there are never enough lights!”. George loved nature and always had beautiful flowers and vegetables in his garden, his attention to detail was amazing. George was an avid hunter and an amazing cook. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others was unmatched. His sense of humor and storytelling skills captivated audiences.
George’s friends and family will always have him in their hearts as he was a one-of-a-kind human. George was an Honorably Discharged Marine Corp Veteran and proudly served from 1979 to 1984. He always felt the strong brotherhood of the Marines.
Music was a huge part of George’s days. His taste was eclectic and he always knew all the words. He was a huge sports fan, especially the Phillies and Eagles.George himself played football at McKean High School (graduate of the Class of ’79) followed by a stint in a semi-pro league. He had a special place in his heart for animals, and was known to bring home injured strays – including a turtle which had been hit by a car – and nursed them back to health.
He was a longtime employee of Executone before starting his own business, Craig Communications, in 2019.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 6-7pm, Tuesday, September 17 at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, followed by a funeral service at 7pm.
George will be laid to rest privately at a future date at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. To honor George’s love of the natural world, the family suggests honoring his memory by sending a donation to Ducks Unlimited.
