Joe was 90 years old when he passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland he was the son of John and Beatrice Kilgannon. As a teenager Joe boarded a ship for America, “the greatest country in the World,” he graduated high school, moved to Delaware where he met the love of his life Martha.
Joe entered the Marine Corps to thank the country he so loved for welcoming him. While in the Marine Corps Joe was given the opportunity to become a United States Citizen which made him so proud. Joe obtained the rank of Sergeant just 18 months after enlistment. After faithfully serving his country, Joe was honorably discharged in 1962, having earned multiple Military declarations.
He then went to work at Delaware County Supply Co. where he became a Vice President. He retired after 47 years.
Joe and Martha married in October 1954 and enjoyed 66 and a half years of marriage until Martha’s death in March of 2022. They enjoyed many years of family vacations, traveling with their grandchildren to celebrate their high school graduations, sailing the Chesapeake and eating out.
Joe and Martha are survived by their daughters: Maureen Kilgannon, Jean Grubbs (Mike) and MaryEllen Dando (Bob); five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Wes), Donald (Jessi), Robert, Rebecca and Kate (Aaron) and eight great grandchildren, Jenna, Julie, Joanna, Jocelyn, Annabelle, Charlie, Sonora and Bella.
Services and burial at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held privately.
In memory and honor of Joe he would want you to spend time with your family, he would tell everyone “Family is everything and all I know is that I have the greatest family in the world.”
