I, Nelson Lamb, AKA Colonel, Captain and PopPop (I prefer PopPop) entered eternal life on November 17, 2024 at age 90 to (hopefully) be with predeceased family and friends, many who died too early in life. Figured I better not hang around much longer or no one would be here to attend my funeral. Cause of death (everyone wants to know) …old age stuff. I’m leaving behind my wife and best friend, Joanne Gilmore Lamb, who was “joined at the hip” with me for 65 wonderful years. A self-proclaimed orthoepist, I’m sure she’s checking out every word of this obit.
I was predeceased by my parents, Maurice and Irene Lamb; brothers, Maurice and Latane Lamb; sister, Doris Lamb Campbell; my son, Barry Lamb (Gail); and my dog, Mimi, who won many awards but didn’t survive bypass surgery. I’m also leaving behind two daughters, Maureen Lamb Ogden (Joe) of Wilmington, DE; Denise Lamb Brockwell (Tom) of West Palm Beach, FL.; three granddaughters, Jessica, Sophie and Isabel (SWEETHEARTS); five grandsons, Andrew, Hayden, Nelson, Charlie and Winston (BEST PALS); and 5 greatgrandchildren. Pray God keeps them all safe and healthy.
Graduated from Salesianum with the great class of 1952. Attended Pennsylvania Military College and graduated with a degree in Engineering. Proudly became a Navy Seal doing undercover operations, which I’m not allowed to discuss here.
I guess I’m supposed to tell you where I worked, most obituaries do. Spent 34 years with “The Company” … Hercules, retiring in 1991. After a week off I went to work at Himont, Basell, Lyondel, Ashland, Valvoline…or whatever it’s called now. While at Hercules, as the Director of Safety and Loss Prevention, we were awarded the prestigious Lamott DuPont Safety Award… twice. During my tenure at Himont, we were also awarded the Lamott DuPont Safety Award…twice. My career was really in a rut!
Retired (again) in 1999 to a life of woodworking, golf (not very good at golf), tasting Guinness and single malt scotches (much better at that), fishing, cooking, birding, writing parodies and children’s books (Homer’s Story), Mah Jongg (an addiction) and photography. Photographed mostly wildlife… birds and some of the parties we had would fit into that category. Hope they saved a few of my photos.
Belonged to a number of organizations during my lifetime, but who really wants to hear about them. Let’s just say family and friends were the GREATEST organizations to which I could ever belong. Joanne and I were blessed with a beautiful family and a wonderful circle of supportive and loving friends. I will miss everyone, except FRED.
Cremation will take place at the family’s convenience and my ashes will lay around in a box as long as it matches the decor. Everyone who remembers me (imagine most are dead by now) are asked to celebrate my life in their own way. Raising a glass of their favorite drink in my memory would be quite appropriate.
My dying may bring tears, I fear
To those who I held close and dear.
I pray that they are joyful tears
Remembering all the happy years.
PS: The stuff about the Navy Seal is BS, but it makes good reading.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers (I’m allergic), contributions may be sent to Salesianum School.
