“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” — Acts 20:35
Doris Mary Powers, departed this life on December 12, 2024, at the age of 93 in Wilmington Delaware. Doris was a person that truly embodied the spirit of generosity, believing wholeheartedly in the joy of giving. Her selflessness not only included her humanitarian causes but extended beyond her lifetime, as she chose to be an organ donor, leaving an example of hope for others.
Born on May 5, 1931, to Bruno and Helen Oshinski in Brooklyn, New York. Doris pursued her education at St. Joseph’s College where she earned a degree in Chemistry. Doris met her husband, Ed, during her college years, and they married in 1954, enjoying 67 years of love and partnership. Professionally, she began her career as a chemist but devoted herself fully to raising their six children. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Doris was a radiant soul whose kindness touched everyone she met. Her laughter was infectious, and she found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
A woman of many talents, Doris was an exceptional cook, seamstress, and violinist. An advocate for healthy living, she maintained organic gardens long before they became fashionable. Her sewing skills allowed her to create chic dresses for entertaining and events, always showcasing her flair for design and style on a budget which seemed effortless. As a violinist, she participated in the community orchestra and had a profound appreciation for the arts. She felt it was important to expose her children to the arts and had them each choose an instrument to learn. Doris cherished family time, enjoying sailing adventures with Ed, traveling the globe, and fostering close relationships among her extended family, friends, and church community. They created a home on the Chesapeake Bay that became a cherished gathering place, hosting family reunions that brought together hundreds of relatives for 30 years.
Together, Doris and Ed generously supported their alma maters, numerous charities, and their local Catholic parish, embodying their belief in giving back to the community.
Doris is survived by five children: Claudia Powers (Charlie Lucas), Christopher Powers (Beth), Richard Powers (Suzanne), Steven Powers (Candy), and Donna Ealy; daughter-in-law Dolly Powers; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister Gerry Keane.
