Elizabeth “Betty” J. Manchester, age 101, passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.
Betty was born at home in Wilmington, Delaware, to Helen Johnson Cloud and William Heal Cloud. She was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School. During her lifetime she was employed by the Ludlow Corporation, American Express, and New Castle County from which she was retired. Betty was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church belonging most recently to Aldersgate UMC.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years Harvey Manchester, her brother William H. Cloud, Jr., and sister Geraldine M. Tomlinson. She is survived by her children Harvey Manchester, Jr. (Janet), and Paul Manchester (Beth); her two grandchildren Thomas and Jennie, three great grandchildren; her nephew Jon Manchester whom she considered as her “third son,” as well as many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Betty was very proud of her Delaware heritage, her family having resided in the state since the 17th century. While her interests included pretty much anything that involved her family and friends, Betty particularly enjoyed doing crafts, playing the piano, bowling, travel, and serving her community and church. Those who knew Betty loved her. She and her smile will be sorely missed by the people whose lives she touched.
Services of interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Betty’s name to Delaware Hospice (www.delawarehospice.org).
