Crum, Matthew W., Sr.

Matthew W. Crum Sr. (57) of Wilmington, DE passed away unexpectedly. Matthew graduated from Elkton High School in 1985. He worked at the Port of Wilmington for several years, then went on to become a mechanical operator at DOW Chemical for 10 years. He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, and passed his love of the city and its teams onto his children. Matt enjoyed the beach and fishing, listening to heavy metal music (especially Metallica), watching sports, drinking a cold beer, and playing with his grandchildren. Matt will be remembered for his sense of humor, cut off t-shirts, and always wearing a sports hat.

Matthew is survived by his wife Sharon Crum (Schafferman), and four children Lacie (Trevor) Richards, Kathleen Crum, Samantha (Joseph) Proffitt, and Matthew Crum Jr. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Evelyn and Beau Richards, Brooklynn Proffitt, Isaiah and Alahna Butler, and their father Eshmon. He is also survived by his mother, Patricia Crum (Essick) and sister Melissa (Ethan) Rafei, as well as countless aunts, uncles, brothers/sisters in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Matthew was preceded in death by his father Edward W. Crum, grandmother Margaret Essick, uncle Wayne Essick, and nephew James Wilkerson Jr.

At his request, there will be no service and burial will be private. Donations may be made in Matthew’s name to the American Heart Association or The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
