Owen Hunter Grenfell was a cheerful, enthusiastic, talented, playful, and energetic young man. From the moment he could talk, he was everyone’s friend. A natural leader, he referred to his fellow toddlers at Young World Day Care Center as “my children.”
He was successful in a variety of banking positions, an adept problem solver and a superb motivator, loved and respected by his teammates. Owen also loved the arts. He was the youngest actor with a speaking role in Dead Poets Society, praised by Director Peter Weir as the only actor who filmed his scene in one take. He was an affecting Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors, played the lead in school plays at Wilmington Friends, was a talented supernumerary in a ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet, performed in six OperaDelaware productions, and was a facile and innovative jazz pianist.
A gifted and enthusiastic athlete, he was an elusive dribbler and sure shot on the basketball court, a dazzling left-handed pitcher, and a golfer whose swing was as graceful and powerful as a pro’s.
His friends will remember his irrepressible personality, joie de vivre, and delight in entertaining others. He will be sorely missed by the colleagues, friends, and family whose lives he enriched.
A celebration of Owen’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home (3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington DE 19808). Friends and family may gather beginning at 10:30 a.m.
