With love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Florence J. MacFarlane, age 91, in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 8, 2025.
Florence’s life was one of resilience, devotion, and love. After the deaths of her parents in 1943, she lived with her five sisters at Carson Valley School for Girls in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Springfield High School (Montgomery County, Pennsylvania) in 1953.
In school productions, Florence stood out as a lead actress, notably playing Joan of Arc in George Bernard Shaw’s play Saint Joan. A woman of deep faith, she was a devoted member of her church, where she found strength and community.
An avid reader and self-taught speed reader, Florence could devour books with remarkable speed, especially those on American history—her favorite subject. Her love for history extended beyond the pages, as she found great joy in traveling to historic places, always eager to learn and explore. She never backed down from a challenge, whether a jigsaw puzzle, a party’s worth of dishes, or a soupy salad.
Florence remained active until the very end, walking for miles and playing with her great-grandchildren. Above all else, she cherished her family. She was married to Albert R. MacFarlane, her beloved husband of many years, who preceded her in death. She loved visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, ever ready to care for the little ones and shower them with love.
Her home was always immaculate, a reflection of her meticulous nature, and her presence brought comfort to those who knew her. Florence’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched with her love and kindness, including her children, Kim and Rad, her four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as extended family and many friends.
A service to honor Florence’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on February 22, 2025, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1120 Darley Road, Wilmington, Delaware. A private interment will be held prior to the service for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Trinity Presbyterian Church, which Florence attended for more than 60 years, will be appreciated. The family also encourages you to pick up a good book, take a long walk, or tidy up in her honor—just as Flo would have wanted.
