Richard F. Purfield, 66, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on February 22, 2025. Born on October 3, 1958, in Philadelphia, PA, Richard was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend known for his boisterous personality, sharp wit, and infectious sense of humor that brought laughter and light to all who crossed his path.
Richard was a chef at heart, always taking joy in feeding others and hosting memorable parties. Whether in the kitchen or around the grill, he delighted in creating meals that brought people together. His talent for making any gathering feel like an event was unmatched, and his famous culinary skills will be remembered fondly by all. A lifelong hockey player, Richard later devoted much of his time to coaching for the Snipers hockey organization, as well as coaching in-house teams at the University of Delaware and at Salesianum High School. His passion for the game was only matched by his love for his family, and he could often be found cheering for his favorite teams, especially the Philadelphia Flyers, Eagles, Sixers, and Phillies.
In addition to his love for food and sports, Richard enjoyed many other passions. He was a former skier who relished the thrill of the slopes and cherished his trips to Bethany Beach, where he spent time with family and friends, creating lasting memories by the ocean. Later in life, Richard also picked up pickleball, embracing the sport with the same enthusiasm and competitive spirit he brought to everything he did.
Richard’s booming voice and quick wit made him the life of the party. He had an uncanny ability to make those around him laugh, always keeping things lighthearted and fun with his clever humor and sharp remarks. His zest for life and ability to brighten any room will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne (nee Kirincich); his two sons, Frank and Christopher (Leah O’Brien); his brother, Joseph (Patty); his sister, Luann (Doug); and many nieces and nephews. His memory will live on in the countless laughs, jokes, and unforgettable moments he shared with everyone he knew.
A celebration of Richard’s life (visitation) will be held on Thursday, February 27 from 6-8 pm at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. The family invites all who knew Richard to come share stories, laughter, and memories. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 28, at 11 am, preceded by a visitation at 10 am at St. Helena Catholic Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be private.

Richard’s legacy of joy, wit, and his never-ending love for life will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
