Frederick G. Mergenthaler, Sr., “Fred”, age 88, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side on Monday, March 17, 2025.He was born and raised in Marshallton, DE, and is the son of the late Rose (O’Neil) and Charles F. Mergenthaler.
Fred graduated from Brown Technical School. He worked for many years as a technician for the former Haveg Industries, Inc., Hercules, Inc., and AET. When Fred was not working, you would find him at Mill Creek Fire Company where he was an active member for over 65 years. He held many positions at the fire company including being a member of the Board of Directors for over 40 years.
He always had a project or was tinkering with something. Fred also collected miniature fire trucks as well as listening to the fire scanner. His most cherished time was with his family, especially at Rehoboth Beach.
His wife of 54 years, Helen D. Mergenthaler died in 2013. Fred is survived by his children Dain Mergenthaler (Janine) and Tammy Quig (Michael); a daughter-in-law, Deborah Mergenthaler; 8 grandchildren (Jennifer, Roddy, Todd, Brent, Mike, Cody, Poppy, and Erin); and 7 great-grandchildren (Daryl III, Landon, Blake, Reagan, Shandi, Juliana, and Brady). He is also survived by his girlfriend, Mary “Mickey” Decino; his friends and neighbors Miguel and Marta Lopez and their sons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred is also preceded in death by 2 sons, Daryl and Frederick Mergenthaler; a daughter, Helen Schoengarth; and his 11 siblings.
A viewing will be held on Monday, March 24 from 6-8 pm at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE. A funeral service will be held the next day, March 25 at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE.
