Charney, Joseph

Joseph R. Charney, 87, died in his home on April 11, 2025. He was born in West Wyoming, PA and graduated from West Wyoming High School. He went on to college at the University of Scranton, after which he served as a First Lt. in the US Army. After leaving the military, Joe worked in education, and then computer programming. After retirement he returned to teaching in the Catholic Diocese.

Joe was a man of great faith. In addition to his church activities, in his spare time, he loved watching sports and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Charney (née Gurka); and his children, Joseph, Sharon, and Melissa. He is survived by his children, Beth Roberts (Scott), Joanne Burke (Patrick), Michael Charney (Deia), and Stan Charney (Lisa); his grandchildren, Alexandra, Samantha, Tyler (Melanie), Justin, Lily, Jessica, Stephanie, Michael, Jayden, Mariana, Stanley, Alania, Marissa; and his first great-grandson, Kellen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16th at Holy Child Catholic Church (2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE 19810). A viewing will be held at church beginning at 10:00 a.m. A separate viewing will be held the night before, on Tuesday, April 15th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home (3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803). Interment at Delaware Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holy Child Catholic Church.
