Esther Mattie Fisher, Age 88, of Wilmington Delaware, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 23, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.
Esther was born Mennonite and remained a member of the Locust Grove Mennonite Congregation until she and Chuck were married. She then transferred her letter to the Pine Glenn Church of The Brethren and later to the Wilmington Church of The Brethren in 1970 where she and her family were members. She was a Deacon of the church serving 6 years on the church board and was a member in multiple church commissions. She lived to serve others in various capacities.
Esther was born in Belleville, Pennsylvania on December 19, 1937 to the late Roy and Katie Kauffman. She was predeceased by her husband Charles D. Fisher to whom she married in June of 1958. They were married for 34 years.
Esther enjoyed working and living with Chuck at Winterthur Museum Garden and Library. She worked as a Museum Aide in the Housekeeping Department. She and Chuck raised four children, Anita Shenk (Randy); Karen Schofield (John); Randy Fisher (Heather) and Cindy Alfano (Dean).
Esther loved being outdoors, especially with her fingers in the dirt! She took great pride in her flower gardens. She enjoyed camping with their church group as well as The Conestoga Trail Blazers and with very close camping friends known as the Night Owls. She enjoyed square dancing with close friends and spending lots of time at our family cabin in the mountains of Williamsport Pa. Esther was also a great baker (especially her brown sugar cookies) of which she shared with family and friends. Other hobbies included crocheting and making individualized Christmas ornaments. One of her greatest joys was preparing Sunday afternoon dinners after church and sitting down to eat with her family.
She was Maw Maw to many, especially to her 9 grandchildren; Kyle, Amie, Vicki, Johnny, Kaitlyn, Ben, Daniel, Nick and Anthony and to her 9 great grandchildren; Hazel, Nora, Grayson, Cooper, Stella, Madelyn, Natalie, Easton and Calvin, whom will all miss her dearly but find comfort in knowing that they will all be together with her one day. She was preceded in death by her brothers; Raymond Kauffman, and Roy Kauffman Jr and survived by sisters Barbara Hetrick and Judy Patterson, along with many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank her caregiving staff at Encore at Foulk Living as well as Delaware Hospice aids and nurses for the extraordinary care of our Mother over the past year and a half.
Services for Esther will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 5 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home (3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808).
